Sari Grove is an (43-turning-34 year old) artist, born, raised &
living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with her husband, artist Joseph
Grove, & two lady bengal cats named B'Elanna & Jadzia (who act both as
child substitutes & art sounding boards...)
12 years of being married & taking the last name Grove, have led this
oil painter to move towards subject matter that jives with the vibe
(truly a 60's chick) of things "Grove" ...
Specialty skills & features of Sari's work have been developed due to
a growing 'Not-to-do list'...The Not-to-Do list began with not using
animal hair brushes,(if you read about how animal hair brushes are
obtained, you may also be surprised,) so only painting with a knife
became a skill...No turpentines, no non-renewable wood stretcher bars
(basswood is farmed in Canada & regrows well), no mechanical devices
like a camera to capture subject (only hand & eye coordination
methodology)...The try-not-to-do list includes avoiding overt realism
(a Bible reading bout while attending McGill University led to the 'no
likenesses' passages...) Framing is also on the try-not-to-do list,
(though collectors are harsher on the new style of thicker frameless
stand alone works...)
A few other Virgo-like-prurient takes influence style, & a year at
Sarah Lawrence College helped form the abstract expressionist root
core of technique- though Toronto tastes tend to veer towards
figuration, so slight bending has been a must to stay approachable
here...
Each new collection represents a new learned experience...Early works
were pointillist made with surgical gloves & tapping fingers (Seurat
biography influence) with sunsets at Avenue Road & St. Clair being the
first real professional inspiration...Sari Grove's grandfather &
great-uncle were Lou & Nat Turofsky of Alexandra Studios, whose
portfolio of sports photographs was purchased by Imperial Oil & became
the founding collection for The Hockey Hall of Fame (see
<http://www.hhof.com> Turofsky Collection)...Dad, was
neuro-ophthalmologist Dr. Bernard Slatt, & mum is Carol Slatt owner of
Lorac Wine inc. agency, brother Jordan heads up Metro-Canada Logistics
who help businesses come into Canada...
